Who needs to update a resume? Every employable person
needs to update their resume from time to time, whether they are looking for a
different job or not. In this day and age anyone might suddenly be changing
careers or employers at any time.
Up until just twenty five or thirty years ago it was
common for employees to work hard and stay with the same company in a similar
job for decades. The advent of modern technology quickly made employee loyalty
and work effort a near non-factor for keeping one’s job. Why?
Computers, robotics, technology, outsourcing, and
consolidation have taught human beings and industry “efficiency,” and
“economies of scale.” Get it?
As technology advances, fewer and fewer employees are
required to do the same amount of work. This is, in effect, the very nature of
Capitalism – and adjustments do come about as one type of position disappears and
eventually another evolves or begins.
Even a God-fearing and hard- working loyal company
employee can now lose his or her job after decades of faithful work effort –
many times losing benefits and retirement along with the position. This is true
for manual labor and white collar work. Everything is changing rapidly. Loyalty
has almost become a one-way street, employee to employer only.
How, then, does someone update their resume? In most
cases a resume service or resume writer is hired to reorganize and update the
information from a past resume of the client. Hiring resume updaters is
generally a smart decision. Hiring or not hiring a professional resume preparer
can make the difference between obtaining an entire career or not.
The new or updated resume is composed by modernizing an
older one, using the latest important keywords, adjectives, and buzz words –
while also adding the newer jobs/positions and making extrapolations based upon
the longer length of work experience.
What has been achieved by an employee in the past is
still the best indicator of what will be done in the future; but, the potential
employee may well convince an employer that he or she can do more, if the
resume writer/resume updater correctly links past employment and skills to
future potential (required for the position in question) in a logical manner. A
bridge must be demonstrated between the past and the future. Specialization,
stability, and personal growth are highly regarded.
The point to all of this is that at any point in time an
accurate and updated resume may well be needed by any of the vast majority of
employed and unemployed people. Almost everyone is vulnerable to the often
unstable movements of the business cycle and the macro economy.
Given the competitive nature of the labor market and the
quick time frames now used in filling vacant positions, it is simply common
sense that it is a great idea to have an updated resume in-hand in case there
is a need for a new position, particularly at a moment’s notice.
