My take is that legitimate work and traits should be prominently featured for deflection, so that the gaps will seem less important; and, the so-called "downtime" should be listed under some creative category if possible. If you were simply unemployed at home, you might ALSO consider mentioning that you were fortunate to be able to live-off of savings or investments or what not, while doing whatever you were doing on your quest.
